Genetics

This half-year course may interest students who are pursuing a career in a medical or biological field, or who simply have an interest in genetics.  The Genetics course will concentrate on one of the units from general biology – genetics. The semester will begin with an introduction to genetics, DNA and RNA function, and Mendelian inheritance. Then will get into more difficult topics such as forensics, paternity testing, and blood typing. Other topics such as various patterns of inheritance, sex-linked traits, DNA extraction, and human genetics will be covered as well.   Conclusion of the course will contain a biotechnology unit which will cover aspects such as gene therapy, antibiotic resistance, and genetic counseling. Labs, projects, case studies, internet assignments, and reading guides will be used to reinforce these concepts.
